Fighting Words Wicklow Is Seeking An Intern!

Fighting Words Wicklow offers free story-writing workshops for primary school students in the mornings, creative writing workshops for secondary students in the afternoons as well as occasional workshops covering all aspects of writing in the evenings, at weekends and during the school holidays.  All tutoring is provided by trained and vetted volunteer tutors. 

Interns assist Fighting Words Wicklow staff with all aspects of programme and project management.  Interns are also responsible for regular administration tasks and also assist in event planning. We offer the opportunity to work with primary and secondary school age students in a supportive and fun environment, as well as the chance to get involved in the running of a branch of an NGO.

What does the intern do?

  • Serving as a tutor/mentor at both primary and secondary school workshops
  • Assisting in the daily management of primary school programmes –assigning roles to the volunteer team, leading the session and/or producing books for each student as required
  • Helping with general maintenance of our Wicklow locations: setting up for sessions, ensuring that public areas are clean and tidy and clean up following workshops
  • Participating in off-site workshops as part of a team of tutors, as required
  • Assisting in the administration and preparation of summer programmes 
  • Assisting with all aspects of workshops at both weekends and during school holiday periods aimed at both primary and secondary level
  • General office administration, including updating the Fighting Words website and database
  • Event management assistance, particularly planning, helping during the event and any required tasks following events
  • At the direction of the Project Co-oridnator, any other duties in addition to or in lieu of the above

What qualities are we seeking in an intern?

  • Love of writing, reading, books and words in general
  • Previous experience working with young people is an advantage - you should really enjoy working with both younger children and teenagers, age 7-17
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written – both with adults and children 
  • Ability to work well as part of a team to deliver workshops with both staff and volunteers
  • Flexibility – a willingness to jump in and do what needs to be done, from tutoring writing to bringing out the bins
  • Web skills and experience with InDesign desktop publishing are a definite plus but not a requirement
  • Sense of humour
  • Own transport is a bonus, but not a requirement

Additional Information 

The internship is offered from beginning September 2019 for a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months, based at the Fighting Words Wicklow centre in Glencree.

Hours: 20 hours per week, typically two to three full week days and occasional Wednesday evenings or Saturdays. 

Fighting Words covers weekly public transport costs/fuel allowance and provides a daily lunch stipend.
