Launch of Beyond Boundaries at Manor House School, Raheny

Twenty four transition year students from Manor House School, Raheny have been visiting Fighting Words each Tuesday, since September, to work on their short stories.

They drafted, redrafted, edited and completed the stories with encouragement from Fighting Words volunteers. After a lot of discussion they decided on the title of the book and worked with a designer on the cover, which was inspired by a drawing by one of the writers.

Fighting Words at International Literature Festival Dublin - St Patrick's Park

The Party in the Park, the children's festival as part of the International Literature Festival Dublin, took place at St Patrick's Park, next to St Patrick's Cathedral on Sunday, 20 May. Our brilliant team ran two workshops for kids aged 6-11 years. Check out the brilliant stories: Talking Pizza goes to the moon and Leah the Alien

SUMMER CAMP SCHEDULE TO BE ANNOUNCED IN LATE MAY!

The 2018 summer camp schedule will be announced at the end of this month on our website, social media and via our parent mailing list.

Camps are aimed at one of three age groups: 8-10 years, 11-13 years and 14-17 years. Due to the popularity of our camps and to ensure fairness, participants are limited to one camp only, we are very strict with regard to age ranges and places are allocated by lottery.

Fighting Words & Silver Thread - Workshops for Bealtaine Festival 2018!

Once again, Fighting Words is working with the Silver Thread team to bring older people and younger people together to tell their stories in two workshops as part of the Bealtaine Festival

We worked with residents at CareChoice Nursing Home in Clare Hall and fourth class students from St Francis of Assisi Primary School, Belmayne.

Fighting Words and Children In Hospital Ireland - Launching Our Partnership on World Book Day!

Our first workshop with Children in Hospital Ireland was full of creativity and fun!

On Friday, March 9th author Sarah Webb and illustrator Philip Kennedy and the Children in Hospital Ireland team came together for a magical morning, helping young authors at Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin create a brand new story for World Book Day.

Fighting Words Goes Nationwide!

RTE's Nationwide featured Fighting Words on a recent episode! The piece featured the launch of The Search at our Dublin centre and with staff and volunteers visiting from  Fighting Words Belfast & Fighting Words Wicklow (with contributions from Fighting Words Cork). The Search is a book  written by four primary school classes from around Ireland as part of The Big Picture initiative with the Laureate na nOg.

The Nationwide piece also featured our new workshops in Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow as well as interviews with Fighting Words co-founder Roddy Doyle and Laureate na nOg PJ Lynch!

Fighting Words - In The News Around Ireland!

Both Fighting Words North West and Fighting Words Wicklow have been featured in the local press recently - in the Wicklow People and the Donegal Post.

Fighting Words has expanded to different locations around the country in the last three years, offering free creative writing workshops to children and young people in Belfast, Cork, Galway, Mayo, the Northwest (Donegal/Sligo/Leitrim) and Wicklow - with more locations on the way!

9th Birthday Party

At our recent 9th birthday party, we celebrated nine years of incredible stories and creativity, all made possible by our amazing volunteer writing tutors and story illustrators. 

Our longest-serving volunteers were presented with beautiful commemorative medals made by silversmith Séamus Gill and based on Jim Fitzpatrick's specially desgined Fighting Words logo.

The Big Story for The Big Picture: The Search Launched in Dublin!

A gripping thriller called The Search, written and illustrated by almost 100 Irish school children at Fighting Words workshops across the island of Ireland, was launched at Fighting Words in Dublin on Friday, 26 January 2018.

The Search was created as part of The Big Picture project, an initiative of Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch in collaboration with Fighting Words and Fighting Words Belfast

OUR FRIEND BRIAN RUANE

 

It is with great sadness that we mourn our wonderful friend and former colleague Brian Ruane. Brian was a lifelong advocate for education and human rights, who did so much for so many. We offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Beth and daughter Saorla and the rest of Brian's family. We mourn together with them and Brian's wide circle of friends and colleagues from St Patrick's College/DCU, Trócaire and Amnesty International, among many others. May he rest in peace. 

Dublin In The Coming Times - Now Available From Dublin City Libraries!

Fighting Words launched their new book, Dublin In The Coming Times on Wednesday 29 November 2017 in Dublin City Library & Archive to a packed audience of aspiring and established writers and illustrators.  The book features a selection of short stories, poetry and prose from members of Dublin City Libraries Creative Writing groups alongside writings from well known established authors.

In his 1893 collection, ‘The Rose’, WB Yeats included the poem ‘To Ireland in the Coming Times’. Borrowing its title, Dublin in the Coming Times was a free, citywide programme of creative writing in which Dubliners, young and old, created their own stories and poems as they looked to the future of their city.

Story Writing with Fáilte Isteach Tyrrelstown

We recently had the opportunity to work with writers from over 20 countries at Failte Isteach Tyrrelstown!

The group meets weekly for conversational English and on 29 November they wrote their first story together. They are supported by a great team of volunteers and by Fingal County Council at Tyrrelstown Community Centre.

The authors came from Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Poland, Moldova, Russia, Spain, India, Brazil. Albania, Libya, Sweden, Dominican Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and of course Ireland.

Children's Rights Children's Writing

The supplement Children's Rights, Children's Writing was published in The Irish Times on 20 November 2017

Produced in conjunction with the Office of the Ombudsman for Children, young writers from around Ireland wrote creative responses to each of the articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was ratified by Ireland in 1992.

A copy of the supplement was presented to Minister for Children Katherine Zappone TD by two of the authors included in the supplement, Kirti Achanta and Jack Fanciulli.

 

The Big Picture - Two Amazing Projects

Fighting Words is delighted to have two amazing projects as part of with Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch's project The Big Picture.

Fighting Words Mayo - The Young Prince and The Giant

The Fighting Words Mayo team worked with with the Linenhall Arts Centre on the "The Young Prince and The Giant" with students from Newport National School.

Using an unfinished story written in a school copybook from Mayo in the late 1930s as a jumping off point, the students created beautiful images for an beautiful story. The illustrations were made at Linenhall on 24 October 2017.

Join us for a fun and imaginative workshop where we will create characters and write a story together. 

Then write your own ending, draw pictures and at the end of the workshop, take your story home to show all your family and friends!

Fighting Words Belfast is hiring!

Fighting Words Belfast are currently recruiting for a Coordinator (part-time - 22.5 hrs per week, £19208 pro rata).

Fighting Words Belfast is a creative writing initiative for all children and young people in Northern Ireland aged 6-18. The project arose out of a collective effort between Young at Art, Skainos in East Belfast, the 174 Trust in North Belfast and Fighting Words, Dublin.

The post holder will be responsible for the administrative and operational needs of Fighting Words Belfast.

 

Culture Night 2017

Fighting Words is a Gaisce Challenge Partner!

Fighting Words is delighted to announce that we are now a Challenge Partner with Gaisce - The President's Award!

Gaisce – The President’s Award is a self-development programme that encourages young people to find their passion, get active and make a difference in their communities. Gaisce is a direct challenge from the President of Ireland to young people aged 15-25 to dream big and realise their potential.

Event Day Dún Laoghaire

As part of the National Museum of Childhood Event Day, we invite participants aged 14-17 to explore childhood past, present, and future in a Fighting Words creative writing workshop. As part of this workshop, participants will visit an exhibition of photos and stories related to childhood in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire. This visit will act as inspiration and starting point for the creative writing workshop that follows.

Fighting Words Is Seeking An Intern

Fighting Words offers free story-writing workshops for primary school students in the mornings, creative writing workshops for secondary students in the afternoons as well as workshops covering all aspects of writing in the evenings, at weekends and during the school holidays.  All tutoring is provided by trained and vetted volunteer mentors.

Interns assist Fighting Words staff with all aspects of programme and project management.  Interns are also responsible for regular administration tasks and also assist in event planning. We offer the opportunity to work with primary and secondary school age students in a supportive and fun environment at a variety of locations, as well as the chance to get involved in the running of an NGO.

 

Fighting Words & the FAI- Invitation to Submit Stories, 13-15 Years

Fighting Words is teaming up with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and we want children to write stories that are somehow football related - even if only a little bit.

We hope over the coming months and years to involve Ireland players and coaches in story writing workshops with children. 

First off, we’re inviting 13–15 year old girls and boys to write a story about a fictional character who joins the squad.

Summer Camps 2017

Applications for our 2017 summer camps have now closed. Regrettably, due to demand, we are unable to accept late applications.

If you have applied for a place for your child and a place becomes available due to a cancellation, the place will be allocated by lottery from the names on the wait list and parents will be contacted as soon as possible. 

We are delighted to announce the schedule of FREE summer camps at Fighting Words for 2017! This year, we are running a variety of summer programmes at our centre in Dublin and two filmmaking camps for teens in Glencree, Co. Wicklow.

Our camps are highly participatory and a lot of fun. Come explore your creativity with us this summer!
