Create A Picture Book Workshop - 23 August, 2019

Young writers aged 5-7 are invited to Fighting Words to create their very own picture book! Working as a group, participants will invent an original story together and see the pages of their book being created on the Fighting Words screen.

Once they have decided on the characters and plot, participants will create part of the story together, helped by Fighting Words tutors and illustrators, editing as they go. Everyone will then have time to write and draw their own individual endings to the story.

Film Making Camp for 14-17 Years!

At the end of July we welcomed 18 young people to join us in dlr Lexicon Library to learn about film-making and then write, shoot and edit their own short film in groups.

We had a great four days, and while some technical difficulties did intervene on the final day to make things difficult, all of the teams can be extremely proud of what they achieved on the camp.

The films linked here are all unique pieces, made with care and passion by some very brilliant young people.

Wicklow Young Playwrights - Applications Open!

Autumn 2019 sees the start of an exciting new initiative between the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray and Fighting Words. For the first time in Wicklow, this unique collaboration is offering eight local writers between the ages of 14 and 18 years the opportunity to create their own short plays during a series of free guided workshops. The process, which includes mentorship and visits from theatre makers and artists, will culminate in the young writers’ plays being directed and performed by professionals in a one-off rehearsed reading on the stage of the Mermaid.

Fighting Words Wicklow Is Seeking An Intern!

Fighting Words offers free story-writing workshops for primary school students in the mornings, creative writing workshops for secondary students in the afternoons as well as occasional workshops covering all aspects of writing in the evenings, at weekends and during the school holidays.  All tutoring is provided by trained and vetted volunteer tutors.

Interns assist Fighting Words staff with all aspects of programme and project management.  Interns are also responsible for regular administration tasks and also assist in event planning. We offer the opportunity to work with primary and secondary school age students in a supportive and fun environment, as well as the chance to get involved in the running of a branch of an NGO.

Shaking Bog Graphic Fiction Pieces

"Fighting Words was delighted to be a part of the inagural Shaking Bog Festival in Wicklow. It was a fantastic two days of workshops for all ages in the stunning Glencree Valley.

The festival put out a call to local schools inviting children to submit a piece of nature writing. Every child who responded to the invitation was a winner! All of the work submitted is displayed at different venues throughout the festival on June 22-23 and you can see it here!"

Cork Young Playwrights

The Graffiti Theatre Company/Fighting Words Young Playwrights Programme showcase took place Friday, 21 June 2019  at The Everyman in Cork city - part of the Cork Midsummer Festival.

It was fantastic achievement by the eight young writers: Lilian Chan, Klaudia Kumurkiewicz, Ellie O'Connell, Kate Moore, Lily Banon, Cian Walsh, Sarah Collins and Eadaoin O'Neal.

A million thanks to the cast, mentors, directors and staff at the Everyman for a brilliant event!

Introducing Ghost Quest: Pyramid Poltergeist!

In August 2018, fifteen young people came to Fighting Words to work with staff from Boulder Media and Fighting Words volunteer tutors to create an animated short.

The kids spent a week devising the story and drawing the characters and travelled to the Boulder Media studios to record the voices.

The result is GHOST QUEST - the story of a boy called Jack, his talking shoes, his dog Buddy and his great grandmother. It is full of magic, adventure and teacakes!
