My Two Worlds

By Lauren Lalor, age 11 - Cork

I was lucky that I lived by the sea. It meant I could be a schoolgirl by day and a mermaid at night.

Nobody would believe me if I told them about my life under the water with the jellyfish, Dorky the seahorse, Jim the Shark, Rory the Crab. My whole gang were down there, my underwater family.

A Quark called Jake

By Jake Murray, Donegal age 12

Once upon a time there was three brother quarks, Jake, Jamie and Luke.

They were going on a trip to their favourite place in the whole world, the Large Hadron Collider. They were entering a competition to be smashed there. They were all so excited but, none more so than Jake. He was so excited that he could be famous just like his hero Stephen Quirking.

So, when they arrived, Jake, Jamie and Luke unpacked their stuff at the hotel and went off.

Homemade Teacher

For the past few days, no schoolwork has come through for my siblings. So my mum had this “genius” idea that I could actually “teach” my them.

At first I thought it was a good idea because I didn’t have anything better to do (except schoolwork) and my mum said she would pay me, so I was all set. But when it came to actually “teach” them, things turned out not the way I wanted it to.

Chapter 1: A Dog's Dinner

Boom! There I was in the Smiley Faces care home with all the other orphans, scrubbing the master’s dishes. I was with my friends, Marvin and Patrick.

“Did you ever know your parents?” Patrick questioned.

“No, my only relatives live in South Africa…I wish I lived with them” I said wistfully

The Tale of The Mysterious Girl

By Juliette Whitty age 9, County Kildare

One fine day a girl named Milly woke up in the basement of her house, because that was her room. It was cold, dark and damp with no lovely pictures on the walls or even have bright pretty curtains, as what would be the point of that without a window for them to be placed?

Milly’s parents were horrid to her,  they made her home-school herself,  not let her play with anyone or anything.

Silver Beauty

Based on the novel Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

By Ciara, age 12 – Co. Dublin

I remember the day I was minted like it was yesterday. The metal stamps crushed my nickel brass outer ring and my cupronickel middle together, while simultaneously marking my front with the 1 euro symbol and my back with the year 2010 and an Irish hunter horse and foal - a limited release commemorative design - and poof! I was formed.

Sylvia’s Emigration

By Maria, age 11 – Dublin

Waking up is difficult to do, especially when there’s a troubling task ahead. It’s a constant obstacle. So it was with trepidation that I awoke that morning. I got up, changed and entered the living room.

Mother was frying eggs as Sandy sat beside her. Mother turned and dropped an egg.

“Sylvia…” she muttered, tossing me sausages. Worry crossed her face.

Astrid, age 9 – Dublin

“Boom!” said Lilly, moving her piece on the board. “Audrey?! It’s your turn!”

“W-What? Oh.”

“You okay?”

Patricia noticed that someone was sitting in her favourite spot and she always sat there. She was jealous of all the woman’s bags. She wanted to sit there to see if she could take something.

Patricia was a hard worker and worked all the hours that God sent her. She didn’t have time to go shopping so she took what she could get.
